The instrument measures the maximum tensile force that the coating can withstand before separation. The substrate crack indicates that the breakpoint occurs along the weakest plane of the system composed of the spindle, adhesive, coating, and substrate. The testing steps are consistent with the basic steps of using the PosiTest pull-out adhesion tester to test coating adhesion.
