The Lovibond visual colorimeter uses a series of Lovibond standard color palettes. Under appropriate illumination, the white reflective surfaces of adjacent sample and comparison fields are observed through a tube. The standard color palette is moved into the comparison field using a simple sliding frame, and the user can compare the color of light passing through the standard color palette with the color of light transmitted through or reflected from the sample. For samples that are too light to measure, the sample color can be darkened by moving it into a neutral color standard dial before measurement. Move the slider until the color on the standard color palette matches the color from the sample, thus obtaining the chromaticity value.
