Determination methods for open porosity and closed porosity
1). Related definitions
Theoretical density (ρ): weight divided by volume without any pores;
True density (∼ true): The weight divided by the volume including blind holes. When the powder is fine enough, the true density is close to the theoretical density;
Visual density (ρ): After a certain sintering process, bulk materials are first processed into standard sized samples, and their weight is divided by the volume calculated from their external dimensions, which is called visual density. Its volume includes the volume of open and closed pores;
Block true density (〇 block true): The true density of porous block materials is measured, and their volume contains a significant closed cell volume;
2). Porosity calculation
Open porosity: percentage of open pore volume to total volume

Closed porosity: percentage of closed pore volume to total volume

If the theoretical density cannot be obtained, the sample can be ground into fine powder to eliminate blind holes, and the true density of the fine powder can be measured instead of the theoretical density, and the closed pore porosity can be calculated from the above formula
