Although Vickers hardness can measure both softer and harder materials, it also has its own requirements for the sample. Only by selecting appropriate samples can we avoid the errors caused by this and obtain accurate Vickers hardness values.

Appearance requirements for the sample

The surface of the Vickers hardness test sample should be smooth and flat, without oxide scale or impurities, and without oil stains. Generally, the surface roughness parameter of Vickers hardness test specimensRa is not greater than 0.40 μ m, small load Vickers hardness specimens are not greater than 0.20 μ m, and micro Vickers hardness specimens are not greater than 0.10 μ m. (μ m is the unit of surface roughness parameter Ra.). )

Requirements for sample preparation

During the preparation process of Vickers hardness specimens, the influence of factors such as overheating or cold work hardening on surface hardness should be minimized as much as possible.

In addition, for samples with small cross-sections or irregular shapes, such as spherical or conical shapes, it is necessary to embed the samples or use specialized platforms.
