| Definition of Glossiness and Image Clarity (DOI) Meter | ||
Glossiness (GU) A simple unit of measurement that is directly proportional to the amount of light reflected from a surface, reflecting the glossiness of the surface. The surface texture will reduce the appearance quality, but it will not affect the glossiness. Use a standard glossiness meter to measure two types of test panels, and the readings are the same. |
Fog Shadow (HU) and Fog Shadow Value (HU Log) High quality glossy surface appearance is transparent, deep, and bright. Fog shadows can cause a decrease in reflection contrast and the appearance of halos around light sources, all of which greatly reduce visual effects. In addition to measuring glossiness and image clarity (DOI) like traditional gloss meters, the Jig 408 can also measure haze units according to the ASTM D4039 standard. |
Zui High Reflectivity (RsPEC) Measuring from a very narrow angle in the mirror direction can yield the highest reflectivity, which is highly sensitive to any surface texture, ripple, or undulation. When the maximum reflectivity equals glossiness, the surface is smooth. As the surface texture increases, the maximum reflectivity decreases. |
Image clarity (DOI) Image clarity is used to measure the clarity of the reflected image on the coating surface. Similar coatings may have the same glossiness value, but the visual effect may be significantly different. Coatings with poor visual effects may have many undulating patterns, commonly known as "orange peel". Observing the reflective object from the coating, the image becomes blurry and distorted. The reading for the undistorted value of the surface image is 100. When the value decreases, the image becomes more distorted. |
Reflective Image Quality (RIQ) When evaluating the mirror/scattering factors of high reflectivity coatings and low gloss materials, RIQ is very sensitive. |
Angular photometric curve The glossiness, haze, image clarity (DOI), and maximum reflectance (RsPEC) values detected by the Jig 408 can be used to evaluate the visual effects of any surface. To gain a detailed understanding of specular reflectance, you can download all angular photometric curves to your computer. It is also possible to quantify the appearance of orange peel or non-standard coatings (low image clarity) using the Jig 408. |
