Carbon fiber is a new material with excellent mechanical properties. It not only has the inherent characteristics of carbon materials, but also has the softness and processability of textile fibers, making it a new generation of reinforcing fibers. Polypropylene carbon fiber is a special type of fiber with a carbon content greater than 90%, made from materials such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN), asphalt, and viscose fibers through pre oxidation, carbonization, and graphitization processes. Carbon fiber has excellent properties such as high strength, high modulus, low density, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, friction resistance, conductivity, thermal conductivity, low coefficient of expansion, and shock absorption. It is an indispensable engineering material in aerospace and civil engineering industries, and also widely used in civilian fields such as sports equipment, transportation, medical equipment, and civil construction. PAN based carbon fiber has a simple production process and good comprehensive product performance, so it has developed rapidly, accounting for more than 90% of the output and becoming the main variety.
The process flow for preparing carbon fiber from PAN precursor is as follows: PAN precursor → pre oxidation → carbonization → graphitization → surface treatment → winding → carbon fiber.

Preparation of polymer: Mix acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate monomers for aqueous suspension polymerization reaction, and treat to obtain polyacrylonitrile powder polymer after the reaction is complete; (2) Preparation of spinning solution: Dissolve the powdered polymer from step (1) in dimethylacetamide and filter to obtain spinning solution; (3) Add a retarder to the spinning solution, spin at a pressure of 0.7-0.9MPa and a temperature of 80-97 ℃, and solidify into a shape in a coagulation bath solution;

The polymerization process can be divided into two types: suspension polymerization using water as the medium and solution polymerization using solvents as the medium. The polymer obtained from suspension polymerization precipitates in a flocculent form and needs to be dissolved in a solvent to make a spinning solution. The solvent used for solution polymerization can dissolve both monomers and polymers, and the resulting polymer solution is directly used for spinning. The solvents used for solution polymerization include dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, sodium thiocyanate, and zinc chloride. The polymerization time using the first two organic solvents is generally more than 10 hours, but with strong solubility, the concentration of the spinning solution is high, and the spinning speed can be appropriately increased. The solvent recovery is also relatively simple, and the resulting fibers have good properties and lower material requirements for the equipment; And with the latter two inorganic solvents, the polymerization time only takes 2 hours.
