The CST (Capillary Suction Time) capillary suction time tester has been widely used abroad since 1970. Its testing is a fast and reliable method to demonstrate the filtration performance and state of sludge. It is mainly applied in multiple fields, including: 1) due to the filtration performance of sludge affecting the output of almost all types of dewatering equipment, including drying beds, belt presses, vacuum filters, filter presses, and centrifugal separators. The CST measurement results are used to guide the stable operation of the above equipment; 2) In the processes of urban sludge dewatering and oilfield waste drilling flocculation treatment, the difficulty and instability of sludge dewatering are measured by CST to determine the selection and optimal dosage of flocculants; 3) In the process of testing oilfield chemical treatment agents, the CST measurement results are used to evaluate the mud's ability to inhibit dispersion and the drilling fluid's ability to prevent expansion, and to determine the type and dosage of treatment agents.
The capillary suction pressure generated by standard filter paper is used to "absorb" water from the sludge. The change in the rate of water infiltration into the filter paper depends on the state of the sludge and the filtering properties of the paper cake formed on the filter paper. CST is obtained from two electrodes placed at standard intervals on a funnel. The time obtained from the beginning to passing between these two electrodes is called CST. The force generated by capillary water absorption in the funnel is much greater than the peak of fluid static pressure, that is, the pressure generated by the capillary water absorption of filter paper is much greater than the static water head pressure in the funnel. Therefore, the testing process does not depend on the amount of sludge being tested, as long as there is sludge, CST can be generated.
